Chapter eighteen

Stream of Sight

“Don’t move!” I heard the words pour from my lips in an unnatural shrill. “Myles, don’t you dare breathe.”

“I don’t have control over my hand right now, and if it stops phasing, I will kill you immediately. Please don’t move,” I whispered my plea. Even if I had control over my body, I didn’t know if I should quickly pull it out or be as still as possible. I didn’t know the rules! Didn’t know his rules.

“Talos!” I sobbed. “Please don’t do this. I will give you more time, more freedom, whatever you want, please, I am begging you.” I pleaded with the wicked king, actually feeling his own sense of pride as I begged for him to spare Myles’s life. His presence was a thick, cool sludge and his amusement mixed with my horror. The contrasting feelings threatened to break my mind.

There was nothing I wanted to do more than scream, but I reined it in for Myles. He needed me right now, and this was not the time to fall apart.

The others crept in from the background, crawling out of their own pockets of my mind. I didn’t have the capacity for them, or to understand what it was they were thinking and feeling, so I turned my attention outward.

Watching Myles as he struggled to remain still, refraining from even the slightest movement or breath, I noticed his face was flush. I knew he wanted to look down at where my hand had entered him, but he was too scared to move his eyes, to move any single part of his body.

Nothing happened for what seemed like an eternity, but then my hand suddenly fell out of his body and limply back to my side. My eyes widened, but I couldn’t see a thing. Blurry, stinging tears filled them, blocking me from seeing him and what state he was in.

The sound of my sobs filled the air, soon followed by a heavy thud on the balcony floor. The sound caused an immediate pull on my heart, and I paused for only a second, tears in my eyes, and unable to breathe. I wiped them away, but I didn’t know if I wanted to see what lay before me, to see which decision the king had made.

“Shit,” Myles groaned, throwing the talisman into my lap. I stared at it for a second, then at him. I took him all in, eyeing down every inch of his body and settling my eyes on his chest.

He’s alive. He’s whole.

I used fumbling, shaky hands to clasp the talisman back around my neck.

He clutched at his seemingly untouched chest, but then he rose and hurried toward me. I jumped up, backing toward the door.

“NO!” I held my hand up. “Don’t touch me! Back up!” I screamed at him, not caring if I woke anyone up in the process.

“Your talisman is back on now. Nessa, it is okay.” He talked with calm, quiet words, coming closer to me with hands pushing in a downward motion.
